Letter from Salt Lake City

Just a personal update, so you know I haven’t dropped off the map… I’m back in school at the moment, pursuing a CS associate’s degree since there aren’t any jobs to be had, and since my biology degree is sadly not getting me anywhere.

I’ve still got my fingers crossed on the Microsoft program for this spring.  If they reinstate it, I might very well be moving to Seattle in August… otherwise, it’s going to be a bit longer before I can break into the software industry.

I’m also taking some art coursework, so hopefully I can contribute something useful soon, in the form of stickers or t-shirts or web graphics.

In all seriousness, Harold, I apologize for not having gotten my ass up there already.  I never anticipated that my personal circumstances would be so difficult, but sometime in the not-so-distant future I should have a valuable enough skill set to land some kind of consistent work.  As soon as I sort out my academic situation, I’ll be up there… besides, there isn’t much here in the way of computer work anyway.  There’s no better place on earth for computer jobs than Seattle.

CT shouldn’t hang his hopes on Microsoft. They’re big on outsourcing, and the Microsoft employee shuttle I see dropping people off daily in Seattle almost never has any White people on it. He might be better off looking at smaller companies near Bellevue or Bothell. Though ironically, Bellevue is slightly more diverse than Seattle.
