FBI Surveillance

Just a quiet reminder:

Remember the General Petraeus scandal of last November? When a couple of the general’s bimbos were sending threatening e-mails to each other and the FBI got involved to solve the earth-shaking mystery?

It came out at the time that the FBI has been archiving ALL E-MAILS EVER SENT in this country since late September of 2001 when the Carnivore system was installed on all American ISPs. They keep them on servers in the government’s West Virginia database center. They don’t actually read every e-mail—no one could do that—but all they need is an e-mail address and they can read every e-mail that address has ever transmitted, or received, since 2001.

Don’t like it? Then let’s stop quaking in paranoid fear and let’s change it.

What does a bully or a tyrant do when they discover a fearful aspect in their subjects?

What does a predator do when they sense fear in potential prey?

    Get rid of your fear.

Hi. I’m another one of those idiots who for some reason thinks I’m bothering Harold by posting a long, pointless, and mostly incoherent tirade of personal abuse on his blog. Don’t ask me why the hell I do it or what the devil I think I will accomplish. I don’t. Think, that is.

Looks like the InterNuts are coming out in force. That’s a good sign, Harold. It shows that you’re being effective.

I notice that the Republicans have now officially caved on immigration. I began making my own preparations for migration several months ago, and it’s going to take me at least a year, but I will be arriving one day. Looks now like I have no choice.

What these loons are really after is not so much to tear you down, Harold, as to tear down your novels. It’s those books that terrify them, and those they can’t ever tear down.

    Dear Harold,

When I get to meet, one of the things I would like to discuss with you is a layered communications system. I currently use TrueCrypt, an extremely powerful program far in excess of what the Government uses for its Top Secret encryption. It is transparent and “on the fly” meaning that it does not slow your computer down nor decrypt your entire hard-drive when you boot.

A system like this can be layered with a backup system, as simple as encrypted E-mail that only sends the opening key of other e-mail to mailing flash drives out to members that only they can unencrypt (and if they arrive late, they are discarded) to podcasts that contain encryption keys based on book or song lyrics that are known only to members or even the old WWII code “The Chair is Against the Wall, Johnny has a new haircut.”.

Monitoring is only good if it receives the message.
