Comrade Jeff Hughes was shot to death on the morning of October 23, 2009 on Selby Street in Nanaimo, B.C. by one or more members of the R.C.M.P. The inquest into his death has now finally begun. Basically, the RCMP is now claiming “suicide by cop.”
The report I got on this is one I had to copy from a printed newsletter; nobody seems to be able to find any media reportage on it.
One Dr. Charlesworth, the pathologist, was cross-examined on June 30th by Doug Christie acting for Jeff Hughes’ family. The doctor acknowledged that the entry wounds, three in number, were from behind and to the right of the deceased. He also acknowledged that with these wounds, death was not necessarily inevitable, had emergency medical care been provided.
The government of Canada’s lawyer elicited evidence of slash marks on the arm of the deceased to support the later inference the police maintain of “suicide by cop” implying Jeff was suicidal. The inquest will continue in Nanaimo on July 25th to 29th, and is open to the public.
I am also saddened to learn that Doug Christie has been diagnosed with a severe case of prostate cancer, and so his work load after this will be very restricted. Looks like Canada has lost the last attorney willing to speak out for the oppressed.
